I also use the medium for my adult dog. We have a large orbee ball, but he far prefers the medium ones. I also second everything that Robert said about keeping him engaged and maintaining a little pressure on the ball.
I have yet to watch Ivan's video's, and i'm sure they are great, but the work I saw with building drive and focus was awesome, Itor has such focus, WOW.
If I could get My Mal to that point some day, I would be a happy camper.
Anyways, I think it's better to not OUT very often, until the dog is very confident.
Why? Because when you teach the dog Ivan's style.... Out = game of tug.
Then the dog is expecting the game of tug right after the OUT.
I could see this being a problem with a competition dog.
Since I have not seen Ivan's video, I can't say for sure, so I am very limited in knowledge, but Bernards method teachs trust. Once the dog has the ball, it's his unless the handler wants it back.
Bernards method = Drive building = a possible game of tug.
