My lab is very reserved around people she does not know. And it takes quite a long time for her to warm up to new people. This is perfectly fine with me. I will tell her to be quiet and settle down. If it is a person I want her to warm up to, then I will allow the person to give her treats, but I tell them to not attempt to pet her or make eye contact with her until she bumps them (that means she wants them to pet her).
Teach your dog to go to his place. Then when people knock on the door, the dog can bark an alert, and you can send the dog to his place, where he is to stay until you release him. This has worked very well for me when interacting with people at my front door.
Many people think all labs are friendly and love everyone. That is not the case with my lab. I, personally, am glad she is reserved. I don't have to worry about her going off with a stranger and I like to think that someone with improper intentions might be discouraged from approaching me, given her size and demeanor.
