I looked into them and talked to people who sell them, they said that the people who use them a lot practiced on several dogs several times a day before they got usable data. The angle and depth has to be consistent for the readings to be valid. When I was reading up on them I came across a reference to a MateTel. It is a low power microscope lens and you put a drop of morning saliva from the dog's mouth on the window. If the saliva 'ferns' when it dries it indicates that the dog is in the fertile period. It sounded like a good idea to me. It would be fairly easy for a woman to test the accuracy of the method using her own saliva and a microscope if she knows the signs of her fertile time. Ladies if you don't know PM and I can tell you.
Thanks and I searced on the web and found the Mate Tel site. Sounds pretty interesting and one of the testomonials was a DDB breeder who says she trialed it for Dog World in 2006 along with progestrone testing and both indicated the same day for ovulation. If you already have a microscope I wonder if you can just take the saliva sample on a slide and do the same? Otherwise was more reasonable at $75.
I'm sure a regular microscope would work just as well.
And an intact male even better.
Have had this discussion with a long time breeder. Who went to the vet to get the blood of his bitches tested in order to find the "right" periode. With the mating i was interested the vet and all his knowledge was 6 days of before the bitch stood. Next bitch the guy dit as i told him to see how she reacts to a male. If she turns his back to him and want's to get mated it is time.
When he took her to the stud dog it took 2 minutes for the first mating.
Some females won't stand for the male even when they are ready, some males try to mate when the females aren't ready. So if you force the situation you have just wasted the immature eggs and you may get one or two pups.
If you take a female who is ready to a new location she may not stand the first day. She may never show any signs for a male she doesn't like. Some males are sneaky and won't show interest in a receptive female when there is a person present. The list goes on and on...
