I just walked out of a 3 hour debriefing of this incident that was hosted at our PD. Jeff Barrett of Lake county PD walked the 50 or so current, and ex-handlers through the whole scenario minute by minute. It was an eye opener to say the least. The insane amount of manpower, and over 150 dog teams that decended upon Lake county to bring the suspect to justice was nothing short of spectacular.
The hair raising details, and review of tactical training advancements as a result of this tragedy were sobering. The thing that made me most proud of those persons involved was that from the moment deputy Williams' body was located, he,nor his dog or his vehicle was left unattended until they were laid to rest. Each was guarded by personal 24/7. Made me really proud to be associated with such fine persons.
There is never any justification for this kind of unnecessary evil, but I am glad to learn that future officers and their K9s will benefit from the tactical improvements as a result of this tragedy.
It was heartening to read of all the memorials to this wonderful team.
