hi everyone.
my mail GSDs eyes around the lids area is very very red after he lies down for a while...
then when he stands up after a minute or 2 its fine again.
what could be the problem?
i went to the VET and he checked him out and could find anything the matter with his eyes so he said i should monitor it and see if it gets worse.. in the mean time i have completely removed his collar and let him relax for the past few days no hard working..just a playful run in the morning playing fetch.
its now day 3 since i saw it the first time and no change.
any ideas of what could be happening?

Does he seem to be bothered by it? What type of terrain does he run in? Long grass, dirt, or lots of pollen and such may bother him a bit.
And, any way you could post a picture of it?

Is it when he lays down anywhere, or only on certain areas? It sounds like a sensitivity to something in his environment. Do you have new rugs or bedding or floor cleaner, detergent.....etc? And like Carol mentioned above, there are a whole lot of other possible culprits to be found outside.

Well, I'll toss this out as a very remote possibility...
I noticed my dog had incredibly red lids and we treated him for conjuntivitis. Tried many different medications, over many weeks, and saw no improvement.
Finally got fed up and took him to an opthamologist and it turns out he has ectropian (eye lids droop/roll out). She said it stands out most when the dog is relaxed and/or lying down, which is why I'm mentioning it.

By "no change," do you mean it doesn't go away now? Or it's all still happening the same way?
Is there any red on the eyeball or just the mucous membrane? (Or is it the skin around the eyes?)
Does he paw or rub at it? Does he rub his face on anything (like he's trying to relieve an itch)?

Are the two the same, or is it mainly one eye?
Is there any discharge?
Swelling?
Is he itchy anywhere on his body?
ok.il answer these in succession.
no change as in its still the same..when his up it goes away.
the red is on the eyelids, the skin around the eyes
he doesnt paw or rub or anything..he doesnt seem bothered by it.
its both eyes..and they are the same
no discharge
swelling..nothing major but it looks like he doesnt want to open his eyes completely..like sum1 who has been in the dark long and then comes into the light and kind of squints to see where they going.
not itchy anywhere else on his body.
as for the other posts..his mostly outside, and his run is grassy and sandy and has concrete where his dog house is. most of the time he lies under the sun shade by the water bowl and its grassy and a bit sandy there.
otherwise his inside.
no new carpets or anything different to the environment that hasnt been there since we got them.
i havent seen it happen since yesterday. and the only thing different is that we had a bit of a tussle with a little terrier that kept trying to bite him when we were on our morning run...no worries..he wasnt bothered by the terrier..he kind of just ran over it..and once we were further down the street the terrier went back home. otherwise everything is still the same.
well...its been a full week and i havent seen the problem again...
i must say the only thing different is the fact that i dont leave his collar on any longer..i have a quick release and clip on collar for him that i only put on when we out and he needs to be attached to a leash.
i think the colloar might have been uncomfortable and strangling him while he was lying down..
