and get their "adult coat?" Just curious. I haven't been around a GSD pup in years, and now I have one of my own (I'm so in love with him!) Anyway, I can't remember most of that stuff. My 3 month old pup's ears are in that cute "one ear up/one ear down" stage, and I was just wondering when their adult coat starts to grow in.
You will see it start on the tail. In sables it starts off like a grease spot in the middle of the tail and works its way up and out from there. I have seen pups start to change coats as early as 8-10 weeks old and usually it is complete by 4 months.
Interesting. I always assumed that the coat color-change was part of the puppy coat shedding, which I usually see at around 6 months old when the sides start to match the color of the stripe down their back.
I have an 11 month old Golden Retriever and he still has his puppy coat everywhere but the centerline of his back. Everyone is always amazed that he still has it and is still so soft.
I figure Soft is good ... Enjoy it while it lasts!
I used the Furminator on my new pup at about 3 months old when some of his puppy coat was dropping. When I started, he was a typical, fluffy, brown sable with the dark line in down back. By the time I finished, he had a full sable colored coat.
