I offer up one more tid bit. If I'm in a situation where there is no car traffic so I have no worry about the dog running on the street; and I see a good sized other dog making a fast approach which appears to have bad intentions; if I have time I will unsnap the leash or if I don't have time I'll drop the leash. This is with an adult dog that can take care of itself. I don't want my dog to be at a disadvantage with the other dog worrying about me and the leash. I don't want my dog in a sit position when and if the other dog attacks. Then I will do what I need to do to break it up. Your dog should protect you against other dogs not just people.
It is a fine judgment call on when to do this and doesn't have much to do with the OP's original question. It is however a rebuttal to the people who think the handler is always in a position to handle a situation.
I feel that this is becoming a controversial topic so I will refrain from commenting further here.

I think you should have "refrained from commenting" earlier and skipped this post.

I feel bad for your dog. I always try to protect mine from bad situations. If you have time to unsnap a leash, you have time to try to intervene. No need to let your dog play gladiator.
