I have a 7 month old male Bouvier and starting to think about neutering. He is going to be a family, house dog. I would like to train him further in obedience but that's probably it. I would like him to be protective as I will take him with me on long solo trips. I read here that to prevent agression he should be neutered prior to 9 months. I also read somewhere that neutering contributes to some diseases. I lost my last Bouv at a young age to cancer, so I'm being careful with feeding & vaccinations etc. Don't want to do the wrong thing with the neuter. I should also say, that I live in a very tightly populated town neighborhood on a small lot, so don't want to scare the neighborhood.

Leslie,
If you do a search of this site you'll find a lot of threads that present all view points. FWIW, I've seen a fair number of aggressive male dogs who were neutered before 9 months. IMO, a dog needs his testicles to develop correctly and, in general, he should keep them at least until 2 years of age. I don't plan on ever neutering my male unless it's medically necessary. Some people may agree with that and others may disagree...there are pros and cons...so you really need to read everything you can and weigh it for yourself.
Stephanie,
The same applies to you. However, you have a female so you have the added responsibility of preventing accidental litters. If there is a shred of doubt in your mind that you can keep your female "safe" while she's in heat, then you should go ahead and get her spayed. There are too many unwanted dogs dying in shelters every day.
