I've been coming to this board for a while. I have been working with dogs for the past 10 years as a trainer, dog walker, and pet sitter. For the longest time I have wanted to get a working Doberman from Europe to do Sch with. Have been waiting for "the right time" to do that. Well, life happened!
About a month ago I was walking one of my client's dogs on the street when we were "approached" by an older lady being dragged across the street towards us by this large massive beast yelling for him to stop and at us that he's friendly and just wants to say "hi". Well he was, and he did (thank god!). It turned out the dog used to belong to her neighbors. They got him from the humane society when he was a puppy (I later found out he was part of a litter found on the street) and recently decided to give him up (they were divorcing/moving, plus the dog needed expensive vet care). The old lady liked the dog and didn't want him to go back to the shelter so she took him, but as it turns out she was incapable of taking care of him and was looking for a home for him. Well, long story short, 2 days later the dog was in my truck on the way back to my house
He is an 8month old Cane Corso and is an absolute clown and teddy bear. Every where we go, every one has to stop and say hi to him. He loves people and adores other dogs. Considering the total lack of socializing he's had (he was kept mostly in the back yard) he has an incredible temperament. He did come with cherry eye, which isn't going to be cheap to deal with (about a grand!). I managed to see his vet records from the humane society and the previous owners' vet. He's had one set of puppy shots when he arrived at the shelter, then nothing. The previous owners only brought him in to get the eye diagnosed which was back in MAY!! and never did anything about it. I got him a series of shots, plus lepto, plus rabies. He'll be getting neutered next week, and then he'll be having surgery done for the eye. He's just over 100lbs and growing.
He's very different from the doberman I would have wanted to have and prefer to work with (it's like comparing a dump truck to a Ferrari), but he's a good dog and has already made his way into my heart. For any one who believes in the "it was ment to be" stories, how can you deny this one! He picked me :P
Welcome! I am happy to know that you adopted a corso from the shelter. How did you meet him? I really hope your dog isn't out of Aragorn or Jewel in Ontario. If you want to know why I said that, its better to pm/ email me or you can help yourself and type in their names and cane corso in the google.
I don't own a corso, but I have been involved with cc community since 2000. In Canada, they have their own corso club, but I would be careful.
I really hope your dog is not from some breeders in Ontario, Canada. Anyway, cherry eyes are pretty common in cc so it is easy to fix

Nice looking dog. It's great that he has a nice disposition too.
You obviously wanted a dump truck instead of a Ferrari. You just never realised it before. LOL
I can't imagine how a cherry eye would cost $1000 to fix. The standard fix for years and lots of dogs is to pull it out a bit with forceps and snip it off with scissors. That takes about 3 second to do. Some vets now like do a tuck and stitch procedure, which would be more expensive than the snip it off method. Is his huge compared to the rest of him? It doesn't really look like it in the picture.
If I were you I would get a second or third opinion.
In my experience the small town vets charge about 1/2 or less of what the big city vets charge for identical procedures (lower overhead). Unless you just like making a vet's car or house payment for him.
Also there is a link to osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in dogs (especially large breeds) neutered before they are done growing. http://www.geocities.com/truebloodpuresiamese/CatoFAQ.html#neuter
Unless the Cherry eye is causing problems now (mattery, drying out, or impeding his vision) you could wait to get it fixed at the same time he is neutered (one anesthetic charge), unless you can find a vet that will fix it for a reasonable price in the meantime.
I have seen a few dogs that had cherry eye for years and it didn't appear to bother them, and the dogs looked healthy, other than the unsightly cherry eye.
