My 17 month old, intact Basset seems fine, although a lot of times he does not eat at all for over 2 days. He has never been a great eater, even as a small puppy. He is a very laidback dog, and he is on the slender side, but he is not terribly skinny. I have always preferred to feed my dogs 2 times a day, but I can hardly get this one to eat once a day. He hasn't eaten since Saturday, 5:30 PM, and it is now 9AM Tuesday. I feed Canidae and switch back and forth to Wellness, or other high quality foods with out any digestive upset. I would not normally do this, since I don't want a dog getting all picky about what he eats, but, gee...the dog has to eat something! I put the food down for 15-20 minutes and if he doesn't eat it, I pick it up. and put it away. I have added canned, or yogurt, Nupro supplement, etc. and he will eat for maybe two days in a row, and then not for a day or two.
I have been throwing out a lot of untouched food. Should I refrigerate it, throw it out, and one of my main questions is: Should I just quit worrying about it??
Thanks,
Sandi
if he fasts himself regularly and you're sure there's nothing else wrong, i wouldn't worry about it yet. it could just be a case of being a picky eater.
a healthy dog won't starve himself - he'll eat whatever you give him if he's hungry enough.
try putting some raw hamburger in his bowl and see if he has an appetite for that. if he does, then it might just be a selective food issue.
