Tom's of Maine Apricot toothpaste ingredients:
Glycerin, water, calcium carbonate, hydrated silica, apricot, calendula 3X, carrageenan, Xylitol (vegetable based sweetener), sodium lauryl sulfate.
Connie do you see anything that wouldn't be safe for dogs?
Whoa, yes!
Xylitol is toxic to dogs; it has been shown to be poisonous to dogs in both large AND small amounts, triggering several bad rresponses, from dangerous surges in insulin to liver derangement.
It has killed dogs (who got into sugarless gums).
Also, SLS is not to be ingested. It's a detergent.
how about making a baking soda paste and letting it set and then using it as a chewy thing for the dogs? im assuming its gets harder and rubbery like dough

I don't brush my dogs teeth as often as I should, but in a pinch have made a paste with baking soda and a small amount of the juice from canned tuna. Not much, and some water if needed. They loved it.
Another home made dog toothpaste that works even better than bicarb for plaque removal is a small amount of the digestive supplement Prozyme mixed to a paste with water. Prozyme is an enzyme supplement (alpha-amylase, lipase, protease) - I discovered it when I was in an online group for owners of dogs with chronic liver disease. That's a different topic, but because minimal toxin exposure is essential for liver dogs many of us used Prozyme paste as a cautious alternative to commercial toothpastes as well as a dietary supplement.
