I 3rd the motion that most K9 department handlers are also regular patrol officers. I am our departments "county" only handler and I do the same job as everyone else, but the difference is that between calls "which we dont get alot of compared to some counties" is that I have the benefit of working alot of highway traffic, while utilizing the dog on traffic stops, versus the other deputies that lack that benefit without calling for a K9.
As stated above, the 16 hour mininum training time is surpassed by most departments. I try to train on a daily bases, some days are only 15 minutes, while some are an hour, depending on what is being covered. I also do 2, 8 hour sessions with the trainer at his center.
