Does competing in schutzhund with a PSD cause conflict with that dog in certain areas? For instance, in schutzhund, the dog sits close to the decoy during the bark and hold hoping to make the decoy flee so he can get a bite; however a PSD doing a bark and hold should stand back (because he realizes the suspect is a threat and can hurt him) and bark to notify the handler that he has found the suspect.
Is it possible to train the dog to sit close for the bark and hold in one case but also sit back and do the bark and hold in another. I have personally seen a PSD that does a bark and hold from a few feet away but does not bark up close to the decoy. The handler is trying to get the dog to bark up close to the decoy. Could this possibly set the dog up for a dangerous situation in a real life scenario?
I can appreciate the fact that you want to do more with your PSD than just police work, but the dogs' primary job is patrol work. Why would you want to do something with your dog that would compromise it's safety, as well as yours?
Each department has different rules in how their police dogs can be used. Some do not allow competitions because of possible injury to the dog or civil liability. Others don't care one way or the other.
If you really want to do sport with your PSD then I would suggest one that doesn't interfere with the dogs' established training and is geared mre towards working dogs.
Hi Howard,
I wasn't reffering to me (not a police officer nor do I own a PSD). I was reading through the 2008 leerburg catalog and saw the dvd for training the bark and hold for police service dogs. That is where I got the info about proximity of dog and decoy/suspect during bark and hold.
In the group that I train with, there is a sheriff deputy and his PSD. The deputy wants to do schutzhund with his psd. I (being new to sch) wanted to know if this would cause a conflict with training the dog to bark and hold. Personally, I see how this would cause conflict as well as possibly cause injury or death to the psd.
