JMO. I don't allow dog-aggression, and I can't figure out how I would ever deal with it if the dog was not on a leash. With me on the other end.
I believe the way to do this is to flail your arms around while screaming SITSITSITSIT at the top of your lungs. Possibly with a COME HEEEEEEEERE! thrown in.
Ed has an article on breaking up dog fights. One way we used when I was teaching classes was to keep a damp amonia/water beach towel in a covered tupperware dish. Toss it over the heads of the two dogs fighting.
You don't want it wet enough or strong enough to damage the dogs eyes but the amonia will separate them pretty quick.
Thanks for the informative posts. I knew getting a JRT would be a big challenge and I am OK with it. I just want to make sure I am doing all the right things so my dog has a good life. When she attacked the dogs I know I have done something wrong and I want to correct it. People tell me "she'll grow out of it, she is just a puppy." but I know if this is not corrected she will keep doing it.
This little one tests me ALL the time. I know she can do all the sit, stay, down tricks...and when we are out walking and training I tell her to sit and she will look at me with that "Make me" look. We don't move till she does what I say...but she does it eventually.
I do correct her more now when she sees other dogs. As far as leadership goes. This dog knows I run the house (in fact in my house the pack goes Me, Dog, Wife....wife is having trouble being a strong pack leader cause the puppy is so cute) but when she gets worked up she is harder to get under control. In the house she will do EVERYTHING I tell her to, including not coming into rooms unless invited and no jumping on the couch unless invited. What reading or DVD material would you suggest for me to help with this situation? When she gets in a zone all worked up it is almost impossible to get her to calm down.
Thanks again for all the great information. If I ask a lot of questions it's just because I want what is best for my little JRT...I'll try to post a pic soon...she is a doll =)
