Cato is coming along very well with his outs with tugs, flying squirrel, basically, anything that I can actually have my hands on, and hindsight, yes, did begin training the out with my hands on object. He releases and waits.
HOWEVER. He did get an a-maze a-ball (similiar to cuz SANS the squeak) to replace his lost cuz toy. He chomps on this ball like it is a huge piece of blue bubble gum. He will come up to me and act like he is going to out, lay head on lap and chomp, catching a tiny pinch of my thigh in with his chomp. IT HURTS!!! THen I'm too concerned about my pain to worry about him not outing.
I've been trying to keep him at bay with his chomping, but how, if so far I've trained the out with my hands on the toy, can I get him to out with out my hands on this toy?
He does out in my hands with this ball about 25% of the time, but every time, I feel like I'm gonna get "THE CHOMP PINCH"

Ouch...I know exactly what you're talking about and it does hurt.
While teaching "out" my dog used to push his head into me and I had success stepping away or to the side, hands behind my back, until he finally dropped it. I marked that and resumed the game.
He caught on pretty quickly that if he wanted to play he couldn't be pushy.
I have no idea, Michele, if this is correct training but it did work for me.
See, I love that he is pushy with the tug, but he's got a *firm* grip on that!!!
I've been slowing down, just trying the command "out" and waiting...he did drop it two times, but both times, he shot after it with his big mouth and teeth when I went to pick it up...
It seems I am lacking training congruency with the "out". Either out with hands on object, or out with them off? Does it matter? Either way, he should spit it out, right???
I don't want to complicate this!!! Black and white, right?
What Betty and I have been through with ours has literally scarred us - welcome to the club!
I'm glad to be here! heh. I do love his "assertiveness" (heh, again).
So, I am admittedly a bit stumped.
Since I did train him to "out" with my hands on the toy...he releases and backs off--doesn't jump at it....
Does OUT mean out whether my hands are on the object or not? Or should I train a different command for him to spit it out? I have club Tuesday and can ask there too, but just throwing it *OUT* for you guys...
