I feel BARF to all my dogs after switching a few months ago. Have a female that was recently bred and my normal routine was beef, chicken qtrs, necks, veggie mix, organ mix. Typically I supplement with alfalfa and kelp powder with cod liver oil and borage or primrose oil. I had a friend warn me about using alfalfa or kelp due to cleft palette? What is or isn't safe for a bred female to eat on RAW supplement wise?
The cleft palate defect is formed at a specific point in gestation from an excess of vitamin A. I believe it is day 19, but you can look that one up. Search with google for canine vitamin cleft palate and you should find what you are looking for.
Vitamin A is present in Cod Liver Oil, Fish oil, liver, etc. cleft palate page
I feed barf at all times, but I do not use a lot of supplements at any time, much less pregnancy. The only additional thing I give my bitch while she is in whelp is "Whelp Help". Some question the validity of such supplements, but after having her pop out 6 healthy pups in 5 hrs, it will be a staple around here. (yeah, I know Cindy- but give me a break- she isn't a Mal!) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
