I have a 4 month old GS with low drive. He get's excited for a very short time, about 1 min or less and gives up. I know that his attention span is about 3 to 5 min. I am using an orbee ball and several other toy's that interest him.
My questions are, how can i get him more excited about his drive? What are some good excercises that i can use to build his drive? Is 4 months old too early for this kind of training?
Yes, i got the building drive and focuse video, and trying to build on this. It does not say anything about when to start these excercises.
Four months is by no means too young. Have you had the pup evaluated by a seasoned helper yet? If not, get out to a club and have him evaluated. You want to know if your pup has the drive neccesary for this type of training. If he is suitable, and he still loses interest, it's because you are not putting enough movement into the prey item. Get a buggy whip and put the ball on the end of it. Then, MAKE IT MOVE LIKE PREY! I bet he'll be a completely different dog. When he shows the behavior you want - chasing and barking - give him a bite. Reward the behavior you want with success. Keep the sessions short to start (3 minutes) and put the ball/tug away with him wanting more.
No i have not had him evaluated.
I like the idea of the training aid you are refering to. This is what i saw on the building drive and focuse dvd. I have tried a variety of toy's but not that one. I think it's worth a try.
Is drive, something that can be trained?
In my opinion, drive is either there or it isn't. Now, it can definitely be built and brought out, but if the pup has no prey drive it cannot be "trained into" the dog. You can also kill drive much easier than building it depending upon how you are raising the pup. If this type of training interests you, I would strongly reccommend you get out to a club and work with a helper.
