It's not a matter of food being better, but it is a matter of your being able to handle the dog right now. This was probably suggested because you are having some issues handling your dog in the drive he exhibits when you use ball/toy. Use food until the dog understands the exercize and until you are quicker and more confident in your training because the dogs drive is not as high. Once you understand the technique, you can switch to the toy/ball. When you switch to the toy/ball put it in your armpit, it's easy to either drop it or pull it out, but still keep it hidden.
