For those who've been into GSDs and Mals before and after, has anything changed? For an objective performance standard here, let's narrow it to dogs capable of police service work.
In terms of real numbers, are there more breeders, and more quality dogs?
Are there more breeders you would now consider? Has it expanded your network of credible people? Or has internet exposure, in fact, narrowed it?
Have the scam artists grown in equal proportion?
In terms of per capita numbers, do you find yourself wading through more dogs or fewer dogs to get the same proportion of quality prospects?
Certainly for the hobbyist, 15 years ago you might have started with a book at the library! My local one has a couple books on Schutzhund from the '70s. I'd say the odds are pretty good that, without the internet, I would have been had to some degree, and I probably never would have known it.
