Prey Drive Problem YES OR NO? HELP!!!
I want to apologize for this being so long, but its hard to explain any other way!!!
About a monyh and half ago My husband and I took in a Stray/Rescue American Rat Terrier. We dont know any background, the vet said he was about 8 or 9 months old. We housebroke him in about 3 days with only 2 minor a accidents, he takes the leash well, he preforms the sit, heel, laydown but the stay command is a bit cloudy.
He plays fetch with a ball or toy but is easly distracted or when he is finished fetching interaction is Moot.
Say we are playing ball and he chases it 3 times and then he spots a grasshopper, bird ect. Thats It!!! Game over and theres no getting him back into the game. Hes in his own little world...
I have tryed using treats that he realy likes to aide in traing or just as a reward he might take them or he might not.
The thing is trying to motivate him and get him to focus, food drive is pretty much 0 zero, Praise is not much more than 0 zero. About the only drive he has is Prey Drive to the EXTREME...for anything that moves from a dry leaf to an auto.
I can say OUTSIDE and I have his undivided attention. COULD THIS BE AN OVER WHELMING PREY DRIVE WITH A TOUCH OF DOMINANCE CHALLENGE PROBLEM??? Bif theres nothing to chase/find he automatically becoms a FUR RUG unless under command, sit, lay down, ect.
Does any body have any tips or suggestions as to how I can use this PREY DRIVE to our benefit???
He is a really intelligent, we had him doing the basic commands sit, laydown, come, heel in about 3 weeks. We know he is capable of much much more if we can only get him motivated and to Focus. THANK YOU any help will be welcome.
