I was wondering what age range a dog is when he starts to bark an "alarm" bark when strangers approach the house/come to the door. My pup's 4 mos old now, and I was wondering when to expect this? (He's a pet, not a working dog, if that matters).
This really depends on the dog. Some gsd's are serious barkers, they can bark if the wind blows. Other's rarely ever bark and choose to just sit back and observe. It's really impossible to say, however, as I understand it, most gsd's don't mature until over a year old so might not show territorial barking until that time. Levi has always barked at other dogs or strange sounds in the night but has yet to bark at people that come to the door. My alpha usually does all the barking and Levi stands by watching intently. My female never barks either so who can really say? I'm working on getting him to bark when the doorbell rings but whenver I try to teach this my alpha male goes insane and the point gets missed
It's interesting to me how different the dynamics are with dogs when you have only one, verses multiple dogs. LOL. I never realized how pack structure worked until I started looking at this site.
So far Kodee (he's still a baby, really, at 4 mos), has only barked once or twice, if you count a really low, timid "woof." LOL - we were outside going potty once night (when I say "we" I mean "he" LOL), and a siren was going off in the distance. Of course, all the dogs on the countryside started howling, which freaked Kodee out. A little, apprehensive "woof" was all he managed to get out. Hee hee. Maybe I should be careful what I wish for, and be happy he doesn't bark his fool head off. :-)
Oh, yeah - he does a high-pitched "excited" bark when I tease him with a toy he wants. LOL!
