I was wondering how you guys have introduced articles to your dogs. Do introduce articles on the track or throw an article for your dog to find and have him down on it? Any good readings on this subject would be appreciated.
I like to introduce them on a downwind track with food under the article. After a while I will take the food away and do the same but keep the food in my pocket as a reward. At this point I will introduce the down into the equation. Locate the article… down… food reward.
I like to teach a dog to down at the article off the track. But like Grubb I put a piece of food under the article.. Make the dog down at the article and lift it up and let him have the food. Put out several articles spread around with food under them. Have the dog down at each one, lift it up and let him have the food. It doesnt take long at all. Progress to spreading out the articles with no food under them, when you pick it up do a switcheroo with a piece of food. Then progress to the track.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!

I introduce articles off the track, pretty much like David says! Here is a great website for schutzhund tracking. Also Preston is really good about answering questions if you email them to him. He's probably really tired having just competed at the UScA Nationals! http://www.schutzhundtracking.com/
For sport I like to lay a heavy, straight track with an article every 10-15 paces. This is NOT a track that the dog needs to follow. Just getting the connection between disturbed surfaces and the articles.
