Doing leash work with my 7 month old Bouvier. Using the prong collar since he is a real tugger. He still tries to get in front of me. Should I always insist on having him on the side? Did I see in the obedience video for a house pet you don't have to be that insistent. Doesn't it reinforce the pack issues?
Also, many times when he's doing something right, I tell him "good boy" and he jumps up and nips me on the upper arm. It happens so fast that it always gets me off guard. It really hurts too, never any blood but a big pinch. I watch the voice I praise him in- not too excited, but he's doing it a lot. I correct him and tell him no, but that hasn't seemed to help. Any advice.
Yes he's a jumper, mostly when I come home at the end of the day. I put him in a sit and pet him, but he still trys to jump. My teenage son encourages him to "up" and then "off", so I'm sure that doesn't help.
As far as the sequence, he's pulling ahead I give him a quick correction or tell him slow and he checks back into a heel and I tell him "good boy" and then he jumps up and nips me in a split second. Ocassionally he'll nip when he is running around and playing in the yard. It's mostly with me though, so I'm sure it's my own fault.
He seems awfully mouthy in general for a 7 month old, certainly more than my last Bouvier, but I think we had a cupcake last time. We had 5 young children in the house and breeder picked out the puppy for us and think she was very wise and gave us a very mellow dog.
Our pup now has a lot of drive. His prey drive is intense- he would chase cars if I let him. He seems like a sweet dog though, no growling with food or toys and no barking at people when they come into the house.
If he's got the prong collar on a quick tug on that, if not a "no".
The prong collar excites him a bit though. And he fights it a bit going on. Looks like I may have to do a harder correction both for walking and the nipping????? He rarely walks along side of me unless we've been walking a couple of miles.
