I have a GS almost 5 months that is highly motivated with food. He does not have a toy drive as yet. I have tried different things to build his toy drive with little success. I'm hoping that someday he will begin to enjoy toy's. I have heard and read, that sometimes dogs tend to suddenly enjoy toy's later in life.
My question is this, can i use a kong filled with treats as a motivator as seen on the building drive dvd instead of the orbee ball? I train him using treats for heeling and he does great. If i were to hold a kong with treats in it as you would a toy for heeling, and reward with this, will it be bad in the future as a motivator?
Will this backfire on me in the future?
Has anyone done this?
Will it teach him to love the kong with or without treats in the future?

I have a female GSD that is limited in her toy drive and I spent a lot of time trying different "dog" toys with no success.
She found an old poster tube (the thick cardboard kind) in the shop one day when I was working scent boxes with her and she carried that thing around and would fetch it and want me to throw it again.....so I went to the UPS store and bought 5 of the long ones and cut them into 12" lengths.
I also tried some PVC pipe with the rubber on the outside and she also loves those and since we do water and sewer line installations in our contracting business, I am never at a loss for finding it. She also likes lenghts of old garden hose.
Sometimes the dog chooses the unconventional "toys" that you would never think of. And as long as it is a safe toy, I would go with it.
She now chooses the toy over food when we work.
Using a Kong filled with treats may or may not work, she may take the toy and run off to eat the treats rather than learn to love the toy.
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
Have you tried putting a toy on the end of a whip? Maybe you aren't making it interesting enough.
My dog prefers her tug above all other toys. I can really see the difference in her interest. So, perhaps it is finding the right one for the dog, as Carol said...
Yes exactly that. He looks to see and smell everything else around.
Like i said, with food he goes crazy, this is why i was thinking of the kong filled with treats as motivation??
