Actually, the GSD (who I work with) is fine with the food thing. She doesn't even look at me when I'm eating, she just lays in front of me and dozes. She wants my food, and I've given her morsels before, but I established space the first day she arrived, the first time we ate in front of her, and it hasn't had to come up again.
However, the Sheltie, who is my wifes dog, and who I try to ignore, will come up and put his head on my knee while I'm eating. And I know he'd just take my food if he thought he could get away with it. I haven't given him a firm correction for it, recently, because we got in the habit of crating him during meal times (he's just such a pest).
Great info here, and I will certainly be able to use it for both dogs, in a lot of situations. Thanks, Yuko, and everyone else. I love being able to come here and learn from people that have the same ideals about dogs that I do. It's great.
