i have (or rather, luc has) a jacket from ruffwear, and i love it, great technically for hiking/backpacking - i like it a lot from a design perspective, and would recommend it without hesitation, though jenni's got me thinking about old navy now too....

Yeah, sadly, most dog coats are available in MANY more small sizes than large... another reason I liked the Obtrack so much (my dog is 95lbs and I don't even know how long) - they have over 20 sizes!, including lots for big boys, and the more size incriments, the better the individual fit...
Ok, I'll stop selling that pricey import now...

The coat that Natalya has for Oscar looked GORGEOUS in the pics I saw for sure . I bought my Dobe a coat from Weatherbeeta; a horse-blanket company. It fits my guy really well, and he's huge (around 95 lbs). I think they even make a size or two bigger than Murphy wears. I like this coat because it's easy on and off, is tough as nails (they use the same materials as in their horse blankets), water repellent, and very warm. I like that it was right around $30 too .

How funny that the 2 girls from chilly Vermont both have 2 of the biggest, shortest-haired dogs here!!
*And Oscar thanks you for the compliment - he thinks he looks smashing in it too!

I made a coat for my Catahoula (65 Lbs). I went to the fabric store and got about a yard of "fun fur" fabric. My thinking was that fun fur is both warm and will not get as wet as some of the other fabrics. I made it into kind of a large cape and used Velcro to fasten it in front of his chest and under his belly. He wore it fur side in, not very fashionable but practical.
Obviously this is not as good as a "real" coat from a company but it was really cheap and kept my guy warm(er).

Luckily I shouldn't need a coat for our pup, 'cause he'd probably just CHEW it OFF anyway. But I love the information and the pics, just in case someday ... there is a need.
Cheers!

Old Navy's only go up to a "large" (75lbs) but we were talking about a PitX...so it should be ok. I can't remember if Mia has a large or xlarge, but I think I took one back b/c it was too big. For a cheap coat, it fits really well; it snaps all down the front, so her chest is covered, too, all the way up her neck and has a collar like a person's ski jacket. I will try to get a picture tonight. I never liked those jackets that are just like fancy, expensive horse blankets. My little bald girl gets COLD.
Isn't it unfair how you can find ANYTHING for tiny dogs and NOTHING for big ones??? Widget wishes it weren't this way...

The coats from Weatherbeeta are just as simple and functional as my horse blankets; they have 220 grams of poly-fill, so they're super warm. Velcro on; Velcro off . They look like they should be much more pricey than they are. I spent almost $80 for my Greyhound's coat, and it's not nearly as well-made and warm as the $30 Weatherbeeta. I tried the single-layer coats but my dog still got cold....we're out in ALL weather; without his daily exercise my Dobe is like a cannonball loose in my house, so his coat had to be extra toasty .
