I'd like some help in the hints department for looking at what makes a competent, skilled chiropratior for my dog. I've been a life long advocate of chiropratic care for the human body and know when I've walked into the wrong hands. For myself that is. My dog would be another story. And I'm loath to find out belatedly that she has been mishandled and is worse off for it.
Any hints or suggestions on what to look at and for, guestions to ask and answers to expect would be appreciated.
Ask for references, ask them how they do manipulations/adjustments. Go with your gut instinct.
My Chiropractor does adjustments with a plunger type thing that has adjustable pressure. She is very competent with humans or animals, horses to Chihuahuas.
I also had different doctor (human practice) do an adjustment on my horse using a dense pad and a rubber mallet on the dislocated hip. Which worked perfectly.
The principles are the same for human or animal. But you knew that.
Thank you Debbie,
My problem is I really have no idea about how a dog should be or can be manipulated. Are sedatives used? A flat padded board or a breakaway table for adjustments? Lift and shake with a bounce? See I don't know what to expect at all. About the only thing I would want to see from someone competent right now are xrays, as she took a hard fall. And thats the only thing I've got to go on at the moment.
People I would trust for references are being run down now.
Both of the Chiropractors who have worked on my pets primarily adjust people. The first one I had experience with did the standard manual twist type adjustments on people but used that plunger type thing (sorry I don't know what it's called) on my dog (Rott. who was tumbled by a donkey, she wasn't lame but she later started to refused all food and was loosing weight) after feeling down the spine for abnormalities, and the rubber mallet on the horse, no sedation, with both animals standing up. Both animals made wonderful recoveries with one adjustment, with no other therapy or drugs.
My current Chiropractor also feels down the spine for tight or misaligned areas, uses the tool on those areas, re-checks and adjusts the spine again if needed, just the same as she does on me. Animals are standing and not sedated, no x-rays. She is very gentle with them and fixes their problems with one visit.
Thanks again Debbie,
Why do these thing always come on the weekend?
Any ways, I've talked to my breeder, and a fellow Sch. club member, neither one of them have had any reason to pursue that course of remedy. My fellow club member gave me a lead or two, and I still have acouple of strings out I'm waiting to hear back from. But it's Friday night........Hard to get a hold of any body.
So for the mean time its lite workouts. And I've canceled my spot in tomorrows work with a helper.
Vets who do chiropractics have to complete certification to treat animals in addition to their regular license. Don't know where you are but in Memphis Tn there is Shelby Center Hospital for Animals. They have vets there that do chiro and accupuncture.
