I've been feeding my dog the BARF diet for about two months with no problems.
I feed her RMB's everyday and I grind up a mix of fruit, veggies, offal, and some supplements. Recently I made a mix with about 2 oz. of grapes a day (not a lot I don't think). I then read the post about grapes being dangerous to dogs.
My dog ate this mix for about two days. Know she hardly eats anything and drinks tons of water as compared to before I made this mix.
My question is this. Could this small amount of grapes be effecting her some way (it was only about 6 oz. total in 3 days)? Or is she drinking so much because she's not eating? I know that dogs on BARF get the majority of there water in there food.
She's not interested in the RMB's anymore like she use to be.
Kevin,
One issue to be aware of is Pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection. As mentioned, one of the signs is excessive thrist.
I am told it normally occurs in older dogs, but mine had it right after her first heat and the excessive drinking, and loss of appetite were clear signs something was wrong. If left untreated it will cause death.
Hopefully this is not the case with your dog, but it helps to look at all factors...
I would def. do a urine sample at the vets. Kidney disease/failure can also show signs of excessive thirst as well as the loss of appetite, so it could be anything or it could be nothing. Don't feed grapes!
Unfortunately also a sign of diabetes. Time for a trip to the vet to be sure. Keep fruit as a rare treat, not part of a diet. Oh, and no grapes! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
I got in to see the vet this weekend and he ran tests on her blood and urine. Everything looked fine except for some protein in her urine. He thinks the grapes may have effected her kidneys. I have to feed her a low protein diet for the next week and see what happens.
It's now obvious to me not to feed grapes to a dog. Can someone direct me to a list of foods dogs shouldn't eat? Thanks.
