after the experience with my first training school (who came highly recommended from a couple of sources), i'm looking for a new trainer.
any suggestions about what i should be asking? so far, i can think of:
-training approach (positive, corrections etc)
-training tools (i.e. can i train on the prong or DD collar)
-approach to behavioural issues vs. simply obedience
....and then i kind of run out.
i found via google a trainer i'd never seen before this morning - he does in-home classes, and is okay w/a mix of positive training and corrections. so that looks good, but i want to really try to do a good job screening him or any other trainers i find that seem they might be a good match.

Well I think the Pit Bull question can provide some insight. I mean, it did with the other trainer you were considering, didn't it? I'm sure he won't bite on the question like she did, but it'll tell you if he's a total dingbat
I know it's not related to training, but you can get his take on raw feeding. Just feel him out, see what he says. Find out what type of dog person he is, as you're finding out what kind of trainer he is.
Also, I did this with my current trainer: Basically, I told her that I was using a method that predicated a slower approach to training (than her Koehler method) but that I found value in her group classes, and in her assessments of my handling, so I'd love to continue coming to her classes, but I would be in the corner not doing things exactly the way she was instructing.
Because I've already taken a dog through a few of her classes and we have a working relationship, she was fine with this arrangement, and Macy gets awesome proofing.
good ideas david....see the approach to dogs overall, i like that.
and hopefully that one anti-pit trainer will be the only 'i don't train pitbulls b/c they're dangerous' trainer i meet....honestly, it's not very impressive to be advertising you can't handle certain breeds.
