I just replaced the cheap one I had from Petco with a nice, sturdy heavy duty one that will actually protect your dog in an accident, rather than the cheap one (like I had) that just keeps the dog in their seat during regular driving. I felt kind of silly spending that much on a canine seatbelt ($86.00 for a smaller one he can wear now, plus the larger one he'll need as an adult), but I'm so glad I did! I was on the highway just about 20 minutes ago, going 70 mph, when a huge BUCK ran out into the road in front of me Of course I had to slam on my breaks, and didn't have time to think about it. Once I got over the shock (I've seen more does than I can count near/on highways, but NEVER a buck), and I was sure no more deer were around (out here they are thick and run in groups usually), I finally started driving again. I looked over, and poor Kodee was half out of his seat, but SAFE! I think he would have at least hit the dashboard if he hadn't been buckled in! Thank goodness I try to protect him just like my kids - they were ALL ok.
I'm so glad I switched from the cheap-o belt from Petco. If we're ever in a real accident, he'll be as safe as possible.
Glad neither of you were hurt! I also love canine seatbelts, but I have a tendency to use them only when the dog is in the front seat, not the backseat.
i think kennels are also good but my understanding (i use a seatbelt, so no personal kennel experience) is that you should have the kennel properly anchored in in case of a collision or high-speed stop.
