I've been wondering if it would be worthwhile to get Bayley xrayed? She is a mixed breed Husky/Shepherd..unknown parents. Well the mother is definately Husky but father ???? I haven't noticed her having any problems but she's only under 2 years old.
When I had my foster neutered, the vet flexed his hips and said they felt really good and tight. We did not do an x-ray. So I think it is possible for a vet to "feel" if the hips may be loose or problematic in some way.
In my personal opinion you would want to do an x-ray in one of 3 cases.
1. You are planning to breed the dog. (In this case the hips would be rated or classified in some way, and I believe the dog has to be a certain age for this to be done.)
2. You notice some problems with the hips, pain or limping. (In this case an x-ray would be diagnostic).
3. You are planning on doing some competition work with the dog, or some activity for which you would need to make sure a dog is sound. In my case, I have a puppy who will be neutered when he is older and I will be x-raying him to determine when his growth plates have closed. This is because he will be a competition dog.
