To the explosive trainers: Is it true that the chemicals you train with cause nuerological issues in the dogs later in life? I was told this a while back and then forgot about it until now.
Like David...I haven't seen any studies either. The dogs' exposure to the training aids is for short periods of time at full strength. I know some give humans headaches, but I've never seen an adverse reaction in the dogs. The dogs aren't "abusing" the odor like humans who are looking to get high so I think the effects are miniscule.
When sniffing a fire scene, the bulk of the primary accellerant has been transformed to a gaseous state from liquid. The dog is exposed to minimal amounts of leftover accellerant among other things I wont go into.
I imagine that there are plenty of other hazards present after a blaze to worry about instead of the chemical used to start it. As far as I know, most search areas are cold.
If you are looking for anything basic on detection, i would say just get a book on narcotic detection, the basis is the same the only difference is location i would think, training theory should be the same.

That is what I am doing now, and it is not that far off of cadaver detection as well.
What I am doing now is looking through our fire department library as we have some good information about "crime scene investigation".
Plus I have taken training on determining causes so I should have a good start until I can meet with the ATF.
