Starbuck just cam into season. She will be 9 months old on December 7. She started to bleed on Thursday this week.
On average how long and how much will a female bleed during her cycle?
I purchased a set of the doggie briefs and I have a bunch of pads to line the diaper. Am I going to be changing this several times a day or 3 - 4 week? OR will this settle down after a couple days?
We went for a walk/run on Thursdsay and there was quite a bid of blood after she chased the ball for 10 minutes. I plan to take her for a long (1.5 hour) walk tomorrow. Is there anything (other than male dogs ) that I need to avoid while she is in heat?

Ahhh, in my experience, there is no average. Cycles differ so much from bitch to bitch.....
Change the pad whenever it is soiled.....And if you buy the human ones they are A LOT cheaper then the ones sold for dogs.
Really, you just have to go with the flow (no pun intended originally, but I couldn't resist). I still train when my girls are in heat. One can be useless on some days training wise, while the other ones gets a bit of an attitude.
My 9 month old puppy started bleeding around October 20th and stopped bleeding about 2 1/2 weeks later. During that time, her vulva and nipple swelled. Her vulva is still swollen and her nipples are more swollen than they were before she went into heat, but not as much as they were during her heat. Is this normal? How long before the swelling in her vulva goes down?
They will usually bleed for 10 days, the amount decreases as they get closer to their fertile days when there is little or no blood and usually a clear or yellowish discharge. This is when they are the most attractive to males. I had one female that was fertile on day 15, some will be ready on day 7. They will be receptive for about a week. Some bitches can be receptive (not necessarily fertile) for 3 weeks, although that is rare.
The vulva and nipples will usually stay swollen for the length of a pregnancy (63 days). If they are breed the swelling doesn't decrease, if they are not bred the swelling will gradually decrease during that time.
Females will also pee much more often when they are in heat. It puts their scent in more places for the males to find it, and probably also keeps them cleaner.
So, is it normal for my puppy to still have a swollen vulva almost a month after the bleeding stopped? Her nipples are still swollen but they seem to be getting smaller. She doesn't seem to be getting fatter. I just want to make sure she didn't get pregnant. I have a fenced yard and another cattle dog, and I know she never got out, but I can't be sure another dog didn't get in and then some how manage to get out.
It is about 11 or 12 days later and she is still bleeding a little. I've been using a human sanitary pad to line the inside of the diaper, but it still leaks past a little. Hopefully she will be done by next weekend.
Keep 'er clean, change pads often, 3 times a day or so.
PetSmart sells really great doggy diapers, never needed to use pads with those. In Belgium they sell like a doggy thong type thing with special doggy pads. I replaced the thong every week for 3 weeks and the pads 3 times a day.
