Hi. I'm not sure what to do. It is past time for my 6.5 month puppy to have her rabies vaccine. She had her early shots and nearly bled to death. She couldn't get over diarrhea. It turned bloody it was so bad. The vet could find absolutely no reason for it. It would start to clear up and then another round of puppy shots and here it would start again. So, I decided these shots were going to kill my puppy before any disease ever could! Now I read your boards! Geesh. But so far I can't find a thread about the rabies vaccine. The vet...same one that tried to kill her..says its past time. Also, he blamed the raw meat diet I had her on! Said OMG its one of those bones so he took an x-ray but nope no bone to be found. I was using raw meat and the kitchen dehyrdrated food( bought it here) as I was quite ill and that was my best for the moment. Please tell me what to do here. I just don't want to give my puppy the rabies vaccine but the law says they must. I was reading an article where they will change it maybe to every 3 years. However, my puppy is really just now starting to get regular finally! I am going to wait. I will not do this any sooner that I have to. However, soon I will be traveling. How does this law work now? Thanks
Liz
Find a vet that will write you an exemption for this vaccine. I won't let anyone tell me to vaccinate my dogs, especially if I have a dog with a compromised immune system.
are you taking your puppy with you when you travel? or boarding her? I would get a pet sitter to come to your home, if you had planned on leaving her behind. If you are taking her with you, I don't see why you need a rabies vaccine? Even if you fly, if you can get a vet to write a medical exemption for the vaccination it should be a non issue.
If you do a google search on rabies miasms, you will find lots of reading.
Hi Thank you for this link. I am traveling by car and taking my puppy. I am in the process of finding only motels/hotels that accept dogs. I guess I'm one of those people that think everyone expects to see the rabies tag hanging from your dogs neck and if it isn't there the dog police come running. Ha I'll buy her an extra name tag so she can jingle! LOL
I didn't know I could get an exemption! This could be perfect if I was in a spot where they say its mandatory.

First, I would research and find a new vet and ask for all of your records from the previous one.
I have to also give rabies since I travel quite a bit and proof of Rabies vaccination is more often than not required at the trainings and workshops I attend.
I have never had an issue with the rabies vaccine. My dogs are required to have it every three years in this state.
There is no way the raw diet caused this and I have limited knowledge on vaccinosis (although that is changing) so I am sure there are some who will help you there.
I would take her to the new vet, have her checked over and make sure she is completely healthy before you vaccinate for rabies. A good vet will be agreeable to this as well.
Good luck....your doing fine....

I just found a holistic vet in Indiana. We have an appointment to go tomorrow to check him out! I asked a lot of questions. First, he doesn't think raw meat bones would cause any bleeding problems normally unless you had a gulper puppy and you would want to stick to smaller bones. And it would still be very rare. They do herbs etc instead of vaccinations if I want! I'm not at all sure about his opinions on rabies shots. I'll let you know if this is a good vet tomorrow. I sure am hoping so. It's almost an hour away and the next closest I can find is much further.
unless you had a gulper puppy and you would want to stick to smaller bones. And it would still be very rare.
You could also do the opposite and get LARGER bones. A puppy can't gulp a pork butt or a whole chicken either. That gnawing action it would get from larger bones would also be great for a teething puppy.
My dog has had a couple bouts of bloody diarrhea. I have sympathy for you because I know that can be VERY scary. I don't know enough about your dog or dog health in general to give you a reason for your pups diarrhea problems, but can say confidently that there are alot of other things that can cause that. To blame raw meat without looking harder for any other problems is irresponsible and I would not take that for an answer.
You may not ever find a trigger for it. Or there could be an underlying problem that is fixable. It sounds like you found a vet that will help. Good for you.
Good luck with your pup. I hope everything gets better.

The Rabies Challenge project is a step toward getting rid of the requirement for periodic rabies revaccinations. It aims to show that the initial vaccine is good for life.
The project will be run at the University of Wisconsin. It appears they now have enough funding to get started.

Thank you for posting this again. Our training club made a contribution, and I think it's an extremely worthy cause. Thank you once again to Jean Dodds.
