I am not sure if I have a problem on my hands or not. Thor had his dinner of chicken wings, egg and a bit of yogurt last night no issues. Today he is behaving normally and there is no indication of anything being wrong. However, when we were out earlier, he had a problem going the bathroom. He tried a couple of times and was straining when he finally went. The BM was normal but I am 99pct sure there was blood in it. The one percent being; my oldest daughter might have given him her leftover turkey soup with carrots. She is on a plane back to school so I won't be able to check with her for a couple of hours. Though I doubt it. Any suggestions? I'd take him to the vet but I'd rather go with some information before I am told to stop the raw feeding.....though maybe that wouldn't happen but I'd like to defend my choice with some solid facts. Why his great health and condition won't be good enough I don't know
Do you feed wings often? There's a lot of bone in the wings in relation to the meat. He may just be constipated (that can cause blood, I've heard, from the straining). Was it really hard and dry? If so, I would give him some pumpkin and/or fish oil.
This is just my opinion though, and the addition of the blood is one I haven't had to deal with so take what I said with a grain of salt.
PS- You might want to try chicken quarters, if you don't feed them already.
Given his age and sex, you may want to take a close look at his anus. He is in the prime demographics for perianal fistulas and straining to go was our first symptom.
Hopefully it is just too much bone to meat, but if you see him continuing to strain, licking his rectum a lot and what appear to be little tunnels in the rectum itself ...............
Thanks for the replies. His diet has not been as balanced this week as it should be. With the holidays and my daughter being home etc....more bone than usual.
LOL, Connie, I was kind of hoping it wasn't blood but undigested carrots from the soup...it was a stretch, color was off but I was reaching.
It was only a small spot of blood on the stool not in it (gross topic). And it was only the one time. He won't go until tomorrow and I'll check then. I only fed boiled chicken breast tonight with his supplements, I may do the same tomorrow and see how it goes.
The perianal fistulas is a concern because I know they are possibly carried in his line. He has a cousin which has presented with them. His breeder has been very up front about any issues that have arisen with her dogs. From what I can see everything in that area looks okay but I will definitely be on the look out for other signs and symptoms.
