Would spaying/neutering affect a dog's personality if it is done at age two like mentioned in another thread? Hormones are being altered and wondered if it made a difference.
All the dogs I have had in the past have been spayed at a relatively early age but with this one I have now, I am planning to wait at least a year or so.
Removing an entire body system is always going to change things; how could it not? Waiting until 2 is the bare minimum for proper physical development, however, GSDs tend to mature slowly (some lines more than others) and spaying at 2, to me, would still potentially stunt some mental maturity, but many people don't care about this. http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.html Forget about the fact that this is talking about athletes in particular; read the cancer and behavior parts. Even non-working dog people should be aware of these aspects of the question.

Well, I see a lot of unspayed adults come into the local shelter and often not get spayed for some time. I have to say that I have not seen personality changes. Of course, I am not living with the dogs, and I imagine something minor could slip past me. But I have seen dogs every day for weeks both before and after....

I do realize that it's strictly anecdotal.
I'm referring to full-grown adults, BTW. I haven't done much in the puppy area.
I have a dog who was neutered at 5.5yrs...he's totally the same, personality-wise...but his body composition has drastically changed for the worse. He's not fat, but very soft and used to be super muscular...now he feels kind of fragile. But no, personality hasn't changed. Neither has dominance, snarling at other dogs, and just general bad-temperedness . However, he was waaay past maturity when he was neutered due to cryptorchidism. I think neutering or spaying before full maturity on all levels is a big mistake.
