Since there is a post on the OFA I thought I would start one on the GDC as well. I haven't really heard much about them, and they aren't used a whole lot. They are in the USA and certify at one year of age.
The Institute for Genetic Disease Control in Animals (GDC) is an open registry for various health clearances. They release all results and keep the sire and dam's names on file so that one can track who has produced what. I have heard that they use some of the same vets as the OFA to give the ratings, but I have not confirmed that. They cerfity at one year of age for hips and elbows as I have previously stated (I'm not sure about the other joints). They do not have many people using the registries and they are considering spending their money on education instead of continuing the registries if the word does not get out. To me it sounds like they are closer to the SV hip certification system than the OFA because they release all results and certify at one year, but I honestly haven't spent a lot of time looking into the SV system.
You can probably find anything I left out on their web page. I provided a link in my first post but since the UBB code is turned off I couldn't make it clickable.
I sent Auster's hip and elbow films to them and they sent the results back very promptly (in about a month, even though this was over Christmas). For what it is worth, she was excellent, and a year (and massive doses of Baytril at 15 months and being spayed, etc.) later the OFA rated her as fair. With the Baytril it really isn't fair to compare, though. Her elbows were unaffected at one year and I didn't have them done again because the vet would have put her under for it.
I am not affiliated with the GDC in any way, just someone who hopes they are able to stick around because I think they have a lot to offer.
