Thanks Debbie. I did think about that. I will up her salmon oil a lil and her vitamin E a lil more. It could be mites.. I'm not sure. Would they be visible?
I Googled dry flaky red rash and this was on one of the sites I found:
"And here’s another problem... sarcoptic mites are very elusive. Ordinarily, skin scrapings are utilized to pick up mites from the skin, a few drops of solution is applied to the scraping and the substance is examined under the microscope for the presence of mites. Cheyletiella are easy to find, Demodex are easy to find, ear mites are easy to find... scabies mites seldom are found. Take as many scrapings as you like, even go deep into the skin, and the odds are that you still will not find the scabies mites. This has led many an unwary veterinarian down the road to misdiagnosis. After all, if no mites are found on this itchy, inflamed pet with hair loss and skin sores, it must be an allergic dermatitis, right?
Some veterinary schools who accept referrals to their dermatology specialists will not accept a pet for allergy testing until a trial treatment of Ivermectin medication is used first. Then, if the pet is still itching and scratching after a few weeks trial period, they will consider examination the dog or cat for allergy testing and treatment. That’s how common it is for Sarcoptic mites to be mistaken for Allergic Dermatitis... the specialists want mites to be ruled out first before they begin allergy testing." http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/mites.html
They also said that a poor diet (highly unlikely in your case) or a genetic predisposition can lead to mites, and that the affected areas itch, but I have seen dogs that were affected and didn't appear to itch.
I think it would be safe to say that one of the contributing factors for this rash on your dog is immune system related. So anything that you can do to booste the immune system is going to help. A detox, and also Vit C supplements might help. The zinc that I mentioned before can give dramatic results if there is a deficiency. I will occasionally get a sore spot in my nose that will NOT get better for weeks but when I take high doses of zinc for a few days it goes away.
The rash LOOKS like ring worm, except that it's the wrong shape. If it is ring worm it probably won't show much improvement for a few days, and may take a week or two to completely heal.
Ah! Thanks, Connie. I'm glad it's almost gone, but I thought he had said that he was going to the vet last Sat., and was just wondering if there was a definitive diagnosis. Odd presentation, so I was just curious.
Hi Amber, yes, as Connnie stated, it's almost gone. I actually didn't go to the vet on Sat after all because we had a pretty decent snow storm (as you can see from the vids ) and I had to go to work. I'm tempted to still take her, but if they can't really tell me what it is, I will be pissed at myself. Instead, I'm gona keep treating the rash a few days past it gone, bath her in a medical wash and see how it goes. If it comes back, I will take her in for sure! Blizzard or not!

I'm with you. A rash that subsides with topical care, has no broken skin, shows no streaks from infection.... and doesn't itch.... I'd be pretty much "wait and see" too.
