Ditto on gravel for high traffic areas - doesn't track into the house, looks tidy, cleans up easy and keeps the pads in good condition.
Really? I have gravel and I find it EVERYWHERE! Of course, it's wet here often so it sticks to things. I haven't found anything to match actual grass. We just keep replanting. I'm interested in suggestions, too.
Sandy, it's pretty smooth gravel and i haven't noticed any pad problems and they run hard, jump and play hard on it. It's frozen now and still no problems. I excersize the hell out of my dogs so they have tough pads anyway.
Oh, pea gravel = smooth gravel....I should have figured that out. The gravel I have surrounding my grass yard is the jagged, ragged, differing size gravel and I cringe every time he runs hard into it when retrieving. He hasn't hurt his pads on it but I still cringe

I haven't found anything that beats my mix of concrete for the dog runs and the grassy weedy mess I call my backyard. I truthfully didn't plant the grass. I just mowed down the weeds. It's like a crude form of bonsai

Stones or pea gravel can and is eaten by Dogs, Pups certainly eat it,
I prefer Grass to let them run on in the garden and ours is such.
but our Dogs live outside in a Pen and Kennel and the floors of these pens is a solid Concrete Floor so it can be washed out daily. there is a 2.5 inch layer of Concrete, then a damp proof layer on top then another 3'' layer concrete on top of the damp proofing, this stops rising damp from the ground
