Jenni Williams told me about Adequan. Apparently, most vets tend to prescribe it once arthritis sets in...not before. And as she commented to me, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I agree.
The only downside to Adequan is that you have to do a loading dose of twice-weekly injections for 4 weeks...then you do it "as needed". I don't have to give True monthly injections but I prefer to.
Another thing; I use Adequan equine. Cheaper, if you can get it. Chris Bettin actually does, too. It's only expensive for the loading dose, then it's not too bad, really. I have seen dramatic results. Don't forget your high Ester C doses, either. Adequan, anecdotally, at least, works even better w/Ester C.
her joint supplement has ester-C already, so that's good.
the supplement has 300mg of ester-C per scoop....i'll go look up if that's a high dose or not, i to be honest don't know.
(i'm using http://www.nuprosupplements.com/, the joint support one)
do you think i should get proper hip xrays done b/f starting in on something like aquaduan?
hmmm. since she gets about 2 scoops, according to this site:http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/supplements.html she's not getting enough ester-C.
there's a health food store in the underground near where i work, i'm going to go see if they have any ester-C supplements.
Wal-Mart, etc. has Ester C. Go cheap, as long as it's Ester C, b/c ascorbic acid in those doses is going to result in the runs. http://www.belfield.com/home.html
Here's his site; he also has some products I've used for extremely sick animals, namely Mega C plus. I do 1000mg for medium-sized dogs and 2000mg for Caleb-sized.
i got the swiss brand - 500mg - w/bioflavonoids and echinacea. the tablets also have 50mg of calcium, i think b/c of the kind of ester-C.
that site is great, thanks! i sent the IBD article to my mom, i got her to try high-quality natural kibble and then grain-free kibble for her cat, i don't think she gave the food switch-over long enough, and she's back feeding her cat low-residue eukanuba again (blech). she says she's doing better on it - yeah, but the cat was also doing badly enough on it you wanted to try another food. anyways....
the mega-c plus looks good. i'm going to try the stuff i've got now, but if i don't like the results, i'll go to it maybe.
To clarify: I only used the Mega C Plus w/sick animals. For normal maintenance, I use Ester C that I get at Wal-Mart. I have a cat w/IBD...on Bravo chicken formula. No issues whatsoever. Trust me, I tried everything. Prowl works too, but I like the bone in Bravo. Get it for her for Christmas, and flush the Eukanuba, although that's a kinder burial than it deserves.
oh, okay, perfect. so hopefully what i've got for teagan now will be sufficient.
i have a foster cat w/IBD (and hyperthyroid - 2 things that cause diarrhea! amazing!) and i give her grain-free (wellness CORE) and it's been the greatest thing.
....i know. it kills me my mom has gone back to eukanuba, and she keeps saying b/c her cat was having bad diarrhea, she couldn't wait to let her bowels calm down. the cat also has an eosinophilic condition, which i think is also the likely cause of her IBD. i think my mom forgets how sick her cat was on eukanuba before....argh. i'm going to mention those other foods to her though, i haven't given up
