My 5 month old GS likes to play tug with my older lab. Will this be bad while trying to teach building drive with him, or will this help as far as learning the tug game?
He playes with other object that are not his training tug. I only provide his training tug when training the building drive aspect.
I dont like young dogs to play tug with older dogs. I want my pups to be confident and dominant. Losing their prey to an older more dominant dog will make the pup a follower. It may change later on, but I have seen dogs with alot of potential ruined because the owners played fetch with their pup and older dog simultaneously, so the pup never learnt to be posessive over their prey, losing some drive in the process.
If a pet, then I dont think it matters really. The pup will probably lose some drive from it because he gets used to losing his prey, but it depends on your goals for the pup.
He is a pet. My main goal is to train obediance with a toy drive. He has great food drive and is very alert to training with food. I want to build his toy drive to eventualy fade out the food.
As for the tug game between the two dogs, the GS seems to be more in control of the tug than the lab, he seems to win alot.
My main question is in regards to how this game will affect the tug game with me. Will he learn to grip tighter and not give it up so easy? Will he learn a better bite?
In all, will his play drive increase due to this type of playing?
or will this counter my goals for training?
If you want a better grip, you as a handler need to teach him how to grip. If he tugs with another dog then he is choosing his own grip and making that a habbit.
Grip isnt that important for a pet, but I prefer having control over the way my dog bites. There is a very specific way to play with a dog, and other dogs don't follow those rules.
