i have a 19 mon old mal we are training for police work for about 7weeks now problem he knows how and what to do and starts find and finds all the turns but seems to be distracted so easy while tracking he will stop and look around and hard to get him back tracking this is the only hold up everything else is great. question 1 any one know how to stop him from being so distracted and we are doing 20 min old tracks with right and left turns along with acute angle turns. any help would be great randy
Try running shorter tracks (Distance) with big rewards and then start adding the distance when he's completing the without distraction. Make his reward for the find so great he wants nothing more than to get there. You can also try aging the tracks a little more 20 minutes depending on the conditions there is likely to be a lot of scent floating on the fringe. Unless your sure, he may be getting pockets of scent he's checking out.
Good luck,
Jason

Some days you're the dog, and some days you're the hydrant.
We are having the same problem. But I am doing SAR work so I don't know if this applies - I was told to VARY the age and length. Also the subject must be EXITING. They also said I must keep UP with my dog or they will tire of being held back. AND I was told to have the subject take off and start moving again (noisily) near the end of the track to kick in the 'hunt drive' - do this periodically but not regularly so the dog will never know...just maybe there's a hot pursuit at the end of THIS one...
I am new to tracking myself. I did read somewhere that a bite at the end of the track is good for motivating the track, though not for sch as the dog gos too quick. Yours being a working mali, would this be a suitable idea. More experinced people please advise on this idea.
I have no probs here, i miss my dogs evening feed, then use his highest food item on the track with them mixed into his dinner at the end of the track.
