I saw in the training dvd's that if you want to teach your dog the command to stop barking you first need to teach the command for bark.
Has anyone done this?
Or does anyone have any advice for trying to teach it?
The biggest problem we have is that pup - Max - only barks when he hears something outside. We don't really want to use that as the time to teach him the "bark" command, because we're not in control of the reason for the barking. So how do we get him to bark at a time when we can teach him?
Our ultimate goal is to have him bark and let us know when he hears something unusual outside, but then be able to give him a command to stop barking once he's told us something is out there.
Nancy I got a barker but what I found out is they generally won't bark at what they can't see, so I placed the kennel in an area where she can't see the road and the foliage( nice word for the weeds I never got cut) blocks her view of the nieghbors in the back and side, I think Ed discussed this in one of his vids.
As for the OP, Back tie or have some one hold the leash of your pupper and give the speak command, while doing this you have to fustrate the pupper with his favourite toy or food. once he makes the slightest yap or bark you reward him quickley with praise and the toy/food. Suggest doing this when the pupper really looks cranked up.
There have been a few recent threads about teaching the bark and teaching the quiet.. here are some links so you can see the discussions and get some ideas

Thanks everyone, I did try doing a search for threads on this topic but hundreds came up. Next time I will wade through the results
..... OR, when you are looking for both threads and LB articles, go to Leerburg.com, and over on the left, in the list of categories, click on "search our site" and plug your phrase in there. It's a different kind of search (Google's search of LB), so not that great for when you know the poster's name or the date range or the specific forum the thread was in.... but it is a good start for what you were looking for.
I tried the 'teaching the bark' method Ed wrote about on the LB site (Connie's first link) and it worked great! My dog growled as soon as he smelled my neighbor behind the bush, and then he went absolutely MENTAL when my neighbor jumped out from behind the bush and ran away! Now all I have to say is "who's there?" and my dog barks his head off. Still having trouble mastering the 'quiet' command though .
