she redirects better without gloves on....
Why are you redirecting a working pup? This is the only age where they can get used to biting and gripping human flesh without hospitalizing someone or dealing with law suits. Teach her to grip properly on skin while she's still small enough to do so I should have borrowed you when Lear was a puppy

I feel your pain! This sounds just like my pup at 5 1/2 months. She was very 'bitey' at that time, and all of the things you described (that I also tried) only increased her prey drive, as everyone else has pointed out.
It has gotten significantly better at just over 6 months; and short obedience sessions do work well to redirect the mouthiness, as does more exercise.
As well as toys, you might try a kong w/ a chicken jerky strip wedged in it. Another poster had suggested this and it works pretty well. I smear cream cheese on the inside before i wedge the jerky in there and it keeps her occupied for a while. Bully sticks are good, too (the bigger ones especially )
It should be getting better soon!

Make sure somoene has a video camera! :p
HAHAHAHA....I really need to get some video....she jumps up and grabs my coat from behind me and will hang there with her feet of the ground. I have to kneel down to try and have her let go, if not, I shrug my coat....It is hard to redirect with her behind me......
And trust me, I do not think she is going to have a problem attaching to skin, or anything else for that matter.
Remember the game with the velcro balls and the soft dart board, and when you threw the balls they stuck to it???? That is what she reminds me of.....

Great bite! Man, do I know what those molars feel like. Macy got a good bite on my hand yesterday and started trying to play tug with it....I'm with Mike, there's no reason to redirect a working prospect..but sometimes...whew. It can get a little dicey. I don't feel your pain to the degree that you do, Carol, but I kind of know what you're going through.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I feel much better knowing that other people are going through the same thing or have been through and it's gotten better. Sometimes I feel like it's personal, it's hard not to think that he just wants to hurt me.
What I'm getting from your replies is pretty much to ignore the biting for now and try to get him biting something other than me. Is it not important to discipline for biting to teach him that it's not ok? Or can that wait until later when he's not teething and not as bitey?
Someone said to redirect with food, would that not make him think he's being rewarded for biting me?
And then I look at the photo below and all is forgiven

Basically, with redirection the dog learns that biting you gets nothing, but biting the offered toy or tug gets a game and with food he learns that if he lets go, he gets a treat.
Weird I know, but it works.....if he really likes a certain toy then I would use that. I am not a big food reward person (unless it is obedience stuff). I like my dogs to want to play, preferably tug when they do something well.
When I look at my pup, I think "Oh great, what is she gonna do now?" She has a "I am gonna do something" look to her all of the time. She is not shy about looking devious at all.

Puppies bite, it disappears with age, no need to correct for it.

Hi everyone, just wanted to update on the progress. We were redirecting like crazy after all the advice we got. Needless to say it didn't always work and we still got a lot of bites, but we stuck to it - though he made liars out of us. We had family round for the holidays and we dutifully told everyone he was teething and bitey. So he immediately stopped biting when the family was around, and went straight back to it after they left.
Then magically a couple of days ago it pretty much stopped. He still bites a little bit but now will listen when we say "no". He has turned back into our sweet loving pup. However it does seem a little too good to be true so I'm not expecting it to last.
In saying that though, it's so nice to know that the sweet pup is still in there and will be back to stay some day.
