ha, no problem. she has come a long way. She's still scared of men, but if i make her stay there and deal with it, she does. She used to bolt when we passed by men.
I mostly call her sissy cause she is a giant schnauzer/rottie, and well, she's a wuss. But with more work, she'll get over all that.

That's funny, me I'm a BUFF (Big Ugly fat fella )! So the girls in our shepherd obedience club always use me to proof their dogs in the stand for exam and other judge exam exercises. It is not just abused dogs that are antsy around scary baritone voiced guys like me!
One of my friends has a 1/2 sister to my dog and she was taunted and teased by a male neighbour through the fence and the dog became very fearful of men and actually had to be put on anti anxiety meds the guy had tormented her so much. Happy to say I was able to use my BUFFiness for good and help rehabilitate that dog she is off drugs now and leading a normal life now.
It's a uphill battle for me even my own dog jumps if I raise my voice a little bit. I barked at her today when she broke a down and the girls (humans) jumped too. So I always have to remember to channel my inner 7 year old boy voice, !
Mallory have you thought about using a e-collar? That way you could walk her on a flat collar and have more control over accidental corrections. Just a thought.
that's a riot!!!
i have an e-collar, but my other dog bart needs it, so i cut it to fit him. She is larger than he is. And i can't afford another one right now, but i want all my dogs an e-collars.

One of mine, adopted last year, has pretty much learned how to be around the food, around the door, visitors, etc., after a life outdoors. But he continues to bark frantically when either of two guys I know shows up. Both are well over 6 ft., probably in the 300-pound range, and yes, baritone-voiced.
Neither one has a scary voice, or is brusque, or even looks at the dog!
I've puzzled over this for a year..... and now I'm hearing that it's nothing more than size and maybe voice timbre?

Yes. "Use your indoor voice, Geoff!"
I try to, but it is a losing battle my 4 and 6 year old boys always drown me out!! I can't ever get a word in edgewise most of the time!

I'll be darned.....
I guarantee it! One of my friends that I train with, she is a tiny waif of a girl. She has a male Malinois probably about 75lbs and you'd see him quiver and quake when I approached him for a stand for exam the first couple of times. He was just never introduced to bigger human males from the get go. He is doing a lot better now if he can pass the BUFF test he should be able to pass in the ring. Unless of course the judge is a bigger uglier BUFF than me!

This gives me hope for this dog and his reaction to big guys.
