Hi all. I'm trying ton establish an age on this rescue Rottweiler I just got in.
Can anyone with rotti experience help me take a guess?he is starting to gray under his chin and around the muzzle.
he runs and jumps plenty and seems to have no hip or gate issues. Are they coming or to they age gracefully as a breed?
He is my first senior (if he is one)
Your vet would be the best person to estimate the age. Different lines of Rotts age at different rates. I have a 6 year old that looks and acts like a 2 year old and a 7 year old that is very grey on the chin and doesn't move well.
Interesting Sharon, thanks. Unfortunately his rescue just had him at the vet and it wasn't brought up. His papers claim he is 2 plus some months and I just cant see that.
I don't know as that I would consider greying a really good indicator of age. My Akita bitch was fairly grey at 4 while her brother didn't start to grey until after 10. My Dobe at almost 10 only had a very few grey hairs hair on her muzzle.

it's possible that the dog is greying early. It's a fairly common trait in labs and lab mixes. I have a lab who is already getting her first grey fuzz at the ripe ol age of 1. I find that teeth are the best judge of age since yellowing, teeth cleaning, etc seems to be a rarity among rescues but kibble based diets that have sugars are as common as can be.
I'd need a good molar shot to make a guess based upon teeth.
