I like bag balm. It also absorbs very quickly and from what I can tell there are no ill effects from the dogs giving it a lick. They also seem to think it tastes terrible in my house.
I have both the Bag Balm and the triple antibiotic ointment. Also was thinking of trying some Calmoseptine Ointment which I also have - its active ingredients are zinc oxide (skin protectant/moisture barrier) and menthol (external analgesic first aid antiseptic). Well on second thought . . . I just read the label more thoroughly and it says in case of accidental ingestion to call dr. or poison control immediately so I guess that would not be a good idea since Nickie will probably try to lick anything I put on the sores.
A little update on this problem:
Yesterday we bought Nickie a nice crate pad with bumper (it's false lamb skin). At first he acted like it was a giant plush toy and kept trying to bunch it up and mouth it. He also kept trying to plow under it! We went thru several episodes of him doing that, me taking him out of the crate for awhile - back and forth until it was finally his bedtime and he slept on it with no problems.
This morning I inspected the pad and there is no damage whatsoever - I guess he finally realized that it was to lay on. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he has finally matured enough to not chew it up and it will help with the pressure sores on his back legs.
I should have known it was too good to be true! I am SO disappointed - yesterday while my hubby was out doing errands and the dogs were in their crates, Nickie chewed a hole in the bumper side of his new crate pad and pulled out about 20 handfuls of stuffing. So he is back to having NOTHING in his crate except for a Kong bone to chew on.
The raw place on the back of his right leg was looking lots better with just being on the soft crate pad overnight. Guess we will still have to try to find a piece of cow mat to put in there next.
The crate pad is not totally ruined - I can sew up the hole and re-arrange the remaining stuffing on that end, but still . . . it was $35 and he will not see it again until he gets a little more mature.
