I have 4 dogs. One 3 year old lab mix, one 18 month old Great Dane, one 2 year old Sheltie, and one new 8 week old lab. I keep the youngest leashed all the time and monitor her play wih the others, my question is about the play amongst the others. The Dane and the lab mix chase and play a lot with each other and it seems like especially when I am around. I am wondering if I should discourage their rough play when I am around? I can't tell if there is some dominant pack behavoir going on or not. Their body language is relaxed and playful with each other, not tense and aggressive. They will stop if I tell them to. I am also working with these dogs and them being dog aggressiv on leash.
I have three (pet) dogs. They play rough, and there is a hierarchy, but I do not see a problem. I would go by the body language. My two GSDs body slam each other and grab at the neck, my younger GSD plays very rough with the Eskie, but they do not fight. My older dog can be quite aggressive towards other dogs but I am very comfortable with her play with the other dogs I own.
my dogs play very roughly in the yard, there is lots of deep growling and barking, and they sound like they are going to rip a throat out at any second..at first listen.
BUT butts are in the air and head are down and ears relaxed, tails are wagging and paws are set wide ready to pounce.
Occasionally all action stops and they just stare at each other in that wide "ready" stance with tongues lolling and one will bark like mad at the other and then at some clue I dont see they both spring back into action.
Loki also runs circles around Nico and will actually jump totally over her then circle back and do it again.
They also sometimes run right at eachother and hit chests like a couple of Deer or Elk.
When one of them is finished they just walk off or plop down in the grass. As long as there is no fighting or signs of true aggression, or no one is picking on/ganging up on anyone else i dont think there is a problem. But I always supervise and I never let the puppy play outside with them as they are much too rough.
1) the aggression on the leash should be addressed right away, and handle one dog at a time. you can't stop that kind of behavior with YOU handling 2 dogs at once. Work with each dogs separate.
2) if the dogs are playing and no aggression towards each other is being displayed and they are calm and collected then i would not worry about it.
