I taught my dog to bark by having a treat handy when we were outside and I knew she would bark at passersby. as soon as she alerted (just before she moved to bark)I said "speak" and since she was going to anyway she did it, I rewarded her instantly, before she ran to the fence and she was hooked. she looked at me then at the person then at me and barked, rewarded and Bingo! we had it. a little unorthidox I know but I COULDNT make her bark when she didnt see a real need to.
Amber, you always give excellent advice, so knowledgeable with training.
Paul, another fun thing to teach is "crawl". Dog starts in down position, you put the treat near his nose on the ground but just far enough away so that 1) he won't get up and 2) he moves toward it. When he crawls toward it, praise and give the treat.
Well, thanks Sandy! You're pretty rockin' yourself. I'm not really that knowledgeable (especially when put up against people on THIS board, lol) but I will admit I know the parlor tricks...where I live there are LOTS of old ladies who just want their pups to do silly things so I get lots of practice!
I used a similar technique like Kristin to barking on command. I had my dog's favorite toy and stood inside the hot tub where he could not reach me. I teased him with the toy until he barked and then rewarded him by giving him the toy along with a lot of petting and praise. This repeated a few times along with the command and his light switch turned on.

I meant every word, Amber. You're a top notch trainer (as is evident on your videos of Carbon) and I'd put you up against people on this board any day!
Edited to say: Carbon's OB is outstanding, and that of course is because of you.
Probably the best way to work advanded tricks is to use marker training or clicker training. You break down whatever you wanted the dog to do marking the slightest offering of what you want with a marker. It could be a word or a clicker. As you progress you shape the trick into what you want marking each step as you and the dog progress.
