Looks like -- or rather -- sounds like Ellie has kennel cough. Turns out a dog she was exposed to last Friday is the culprit.
She coughs with exercise if I run her outside in the cold weather and when she gets excited barking in the house or car. It's a hoarse, dry cough and a little gag at the end. Her appetite is good and when she is resting or on a leashed walk she is fine.
From what I have read it's a mild case and it should run it's course in 5-7 days. I'd rather not put her on antibiotics if it's not necessary.
Does anyone have any experience with a dog with kennel cough?
Also, how long should I keep her out of training so as not to infect any other dogs?
Mine got it at a dog show once. I just kept him away from other dogs for a week and I think he quit coughing after about three days. I wouldnt bother with antibiotics or anything unless it lingers longer then a week.
My dog came down with kennel cough about a week after being adopted from the county shelter.
My vet suggested limiting her exercise for about a week, since that really triggered her cough. Oh yeah, initially she would gag and wretch mucus after coughing, quite a mess!
I did quiet it down with Robitussin, I forget the dose, but the vet calculated the dosage. It kinda mellowed her out a tiny bit also.
Otherwise her appetite was normal etc. It ran it course in about 7 days.
Luckily my other dog did not get sick!
regarding antibiotics and kennel cough, a vet once told me that it would be gone in two weeks, or he could give me antibiotics and it would resolve in about 14 days ... smart alec :-P
Thanks for the replies Steve, Linda and Elisabeth.
Ellie was coughing and gagging yesterday afternoon so much that she was throwing up in small amounts so I did break down and get her an antibiotic. I was also concerned of it worsening into pneumonia even though she is a young, healthy and active dog. Hopefully the antibiotic won't upset her stomach worse but I almost felt negligent not doing anything and just letting it run it's course.
I am limiting her exercise and she gets kefir daily in her breakfast so hopefully that will keep her digestive system in balance.
I have some bordetella vaccination questions and will post in the Vaccination Forum.
Hey Linda -- great idea with the Robitussin; bet I could figure out a safe amount to give her.
Katie,
Regarding the Robitussin. Get the correct dosage/volume from your vet. Don't try to guess the amount. It really did quiet down the cough and thin secretions also.
There was a recent thread on the forum that mentioned Tamiflu as a treatment for kennel cough. Doesn't cure it but it did shorten the duration and severity of the symptoms.
